For most of its history, Advanced Micro Devices was known as the company that sold the other x86 processor: the cheaper alternative in a desktop PC, perpetually one design cycle behind Intel (INTC). That framing is now badly out of date, and any serious AMD stock analysis has to start by acknowledging how much the revenue mix has changed. In the second quarter of 2026, reported on 4 August 2026, AMD generated $11.5 billion of revenue, and $6.7 billion of it came from the data center segment, more than double the prior-year figure. Personal computers still matter to AMD, but they are no longer the centre of gravity. The company that once fought over motherboard sockets now sells rack-scale AI systems to the largest model developers in the world, and that shift is what the numbers below are really describing.
How AMD Makes Its Money
AMD reports in four segments, and understanding them is the foundation of any AMD stock analysis, because they behave very differently.
- Data Center — EPYC server processors and Instinct accelerators sold to cloud providers, AI labs and enterprises. This is now the largest and fastest-moving part of the business, at $6.7 billion in the second quarter of 2026, or roughly 58% of total revenue.
- Client — Ryzen processors for desktops and notebooks, sold through PC makers and the channel. Revenue of about $3.1 billion in the quarter, up 23% year over year.
- Gaming — Radeon graphics and the semi-custom chips inside games consoles. Revenue of $779 million, down 31% year over year on lower semi-custom demand, which is the cyclical console lifecycle at work rather than a competitive event.
- Embedded — largely the Xilinx franchise: FPGAs and adaptive system-on-chips designed into aerospace, test and measurement, communications, medical imaging and industrial equipment. Revenue of $977 million, up 19%, with segment operating income of $386 million against $275 million a year earlier.
Two structural points sit underneath that table. First, AMD is fabless. It designs chips and contracts manufacturing to foundries, principally Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM). That keeps capital intensity far below an integrated manufacturer like Intel, but it means leading-edge capacity is something AMD buys rather than owns. Second, the embedded business runs on multi-year design wins rather than quarterly order flow: AMD has reported roughly $17 billion of embedded design wins in 2025 and more than $50 billion cumulatively since the Xilinx acquisition closed. Those revenues arrive slowly and leave slowly, which makes the segment a stabiliser against the volatility elsewhere.
Inside the Second Quarter of 2026 Numbers
The headline figures for the quarter ended in June 2026 were revenue of $11.5 billion, GAAP net income of $2.3 billion and GAAP diluted earnings per share of $1.38. On a non-GAAP basis — which strips out amortisation of acquisition-related intangibles, stock-based compensation and similar items — operating income was $3.1 billion, net income was $2.8 billion and diluted earnings per share was $1.66. GAAP operating income was $2.0 billion.
Context matters for those growth rates. In the first quarter of 2026, reported on 5 May 2026, AMD posted revenue of $10.3 billion, up 38% year over year, with GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.84 and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $1.37. For the full 2025 financial year, revenue was $34.6 billion and net income was $4.3 billion. Put differently, a single quarter in 2026 is now running at roughly a third of what the entire prior year produced, and the second-quarter revenue run rate annualises to something close to $46 billion.
Guidance extends the trajectory rather than breaking it: AMD guided third-quarter 2026 revenue to a range of $12.7 billion to $13.3 billion, which at the midpoint implies year-over-year growth of roughly 41%.
The segment detail is where the picture becomes less uniform. Data center more than doubled. Client grew 23%. Embedded grew 19% and expanded its operating income meaningfully. Gaming fell 31%. Combined client and gaming operating income actually declined year over year, to $582 million from $767 million, even as combined revenue rose — a reminder that the mix within the consumer-facing business is doing as much work as the top line.
Margins, Cash Flow and the Balance Sheet
Non-GAAP gross margin was 56% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 55% in the first quarter. That is a number worth watching closely rather than celebrating in isolation, because it is pulled in two directions at once. Data center silicon and embedded FPGAs carry structurally higher margins than consumer client parts, so mix shift is a tailwind. But AI accelerators sold as complete rack-scale systems include memory, networking and integration content that AMD buys in, which dilutes percentage margins even when it grows absolute gross profit. How those two forces net out as Helios racks ramp is one of the genuinely open questions in the model.
Cash generation is more straightforward. AMD produced $2.4 billion of operating cash flow from continuing operations in the quarter and $1.6 billion of free cash flow, a 14% free cash flow margin. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments reached a record $13.1 billion, up 6% sequentially, against total debt of roughly $3.2 billion — a substantial net cash position for a company of this size. Research and development spending was $8.1 billion in 2025, up 25% from $6.5 billion in 2024, which is the price of competing at the leading edge on CPUs, GPUs and adaptive computing simultaneously.
On shareholder returns, the position is simple: AMD pays no dividend and has not done so in decades. Capital returns run entirely through buybacks. As of the first quarter of 2026, cumulative repurchase authority totalled $14 billion with $9.2 billion remaining available. Investors screening for income will not find it here; the entire return case rests on the business compounding.
The AI Accelerator Push: MI450, Helios and the Customer List
The most consequential development for AMD in 2026 is not a quarterly figure at all — it is the arrival of rack-scale systems. At its Advancing AI event in July 2026, AMD launched Helios, its first full rack-scale AI platform, built around the Instinct MI455X GPU. It packs 72 GPUs per rack, and notably it uses UALink over Ethernet together with Pensando DPUs and AI network interface cards rather than a proprietary interconnect. AMD says the rack delivers 1.4 exaFLOPS, up to 30% more tokens per dollar than Nvidia's (NVDA) Rubin NVL72 system and 50% more memory capacity. Those are vendor claims and should be treated as such until independently benchmarked at scale, but the architectural choice — open Ethernet-based fabric against a closed alternative — is a real strategic differentiator that customers have cited.
The commercial commitments attached to it are unusually concrete for a product still ramping:
- OpenAI has a six-gigawatt multigenerational agreement with AMD, with Helios expected to come online from the fourth quarter of 2026 and deployments accelerating through 2027.
- Oracle (ORCL) plans to deploy 50,000 MI450 GPUs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure beginning in the third quarter of 2026.
- Anthropic has committed to deploy up to two gigawatts of MI450-series GPUs in Helios racks, with the first gigawatt starting in the first half of 2027.
- Microsoft (MSFT) Azure is among the first major deployments as volume shipments ramp through the second half of 2026.
Meanwhile the CPU franchise keeps grinding forward, and it is not a rounding error. Mercury Research data for the first quarter of 2026 put AMD's server processor unit share at 33.2%, up from 27.2% a year earlier, with a record 46.2% share of server CPU revenue. Overall x86 share reached an all-time high of 32.6%. EPYC is the quiet engine that funded the AI ambitions.
What an AMD Stock Analysis Has to Weigh on Valuation
AMD's market capitalisation stood at approximately $848 billion in early August 2026. Set against 2025 revenue of $34.6 billion, that is roughly 24 times trailing sales; set against the second-quarter revenue run rate, closer to 18 times. Forward price-to-earnings estimates compiled in the first week of August 2026 clustered broadly in the 60s — one widely cited figure was 69.5 times as of 4 August 2026 — though published forward multiples varied from the high 40s to the high 70s depending on whose earnings estimates and adjustments were used.
It is worth being precise about what those multiples do and do not tell you. A forward price-to-earnings ratio is a statement about the earnings the market expects, not a judgement about whether those earnings will materialise. A multiple in this range embeds an assumption that data center revenue keeps compounding at something like its current pace for several years, that the accelerator ramp converts committed gigawatts into recognised revenue on schedule, and that gross margins hold up as system-level content grows. Each of those assumptions is testable against future quarterly disclosure, and each is a place where reality can diverge from the estimate. The dispersion in published forward multiples is itself informative: it reflects how wide analysts' forward earnings estimates currently are.
The Risks That Matter
Customer concentration. The gigawatt-scale agreements are transformative in aggregate, but they concentrate a large share of future accelerator revenue in a handful of counterparties whose own capital spending plans can change. Deployment schedules stretching into 2027 are commitments, not recognised revenue.
Competition. Nvidia (NVDA) remains the dominant supplier of AI accelerators with a deeply entrenched software ecosystem, and hyperscalers are simultaneously designing their own silicon. AMD is competing against both an incumbent and its own customers' internal programmes. Export controls. AMD's China exposure has already produced a tangible hit: the company recorded an $800 million charge tied to inventory and purchase commitments for the MI308 accelerator after US restrictions tightened. AMD now holds licences to export certain MI308 parts under an arrangement involving a 15% revenue share paid to the US government, but the policy environment has proven changeable, and management has at times excluded China accelerator revenue from guidance entirely.
Supply and manufacturing. As a fabless designer, AMD depends on TSMC (TSM) for leading-edge capacity as well as on advanced packaging and high-bandwidth memory supply, all of which are contested resources across the industry. The tools that create that capacity sit a step further back again, and Lam Research (LRCX) is one of the etch and deposition suppliers whose equipment every leading-edge foundry and memory fab has to install before any of it exists.
Cyclicality. Gaming's 31% decline is a live demonstration that not every part of this business is on an AI trajectory. Console cycles and PC demand still move the consolidated numbers.
What to Watch From Here
The useful question for an investor following AMD is not whether the last quarter was strong — at 58% of revenue from data center and a doubling of that segment, it plainly was — but which specific disclosures would change the picture. Four are worth tracking.
First, gross margin as Helios ships in volume: if system-level content dilutes the percentage while absolute gross profit expands, that is a different story from margin erosion caused by pricing pressure, and the segment detail will distinguish them. Second, the conversion of announced gigawatt commitments into recognised quarterly revenue, particularly the Oracle deployment from the third quarter of 2026 and OpenAI's Helios ramp from the fourth. Third, the trajectory of client and gaming operating income, which fell year over year despite higher combined revenue. Fourth, any change in the export licensing regime, which has already moved AMD's numbers once by hundreds of millions of dollars.
What the current disclosures establish is a company with a record cash position of $13.1 billion, modest debt of $3.2 billion, growing free cash flow, record server CPU share, and an accelerator business ramping against firm multi-year customer commitments — alongside a valuation that already reflects a great deal of expected growth and a set of concentration, competitive and regulatory risks that are specific and identifiable. Weighing those against each other is the reader's job, and the next few quarterly reports will supply most of the evidence needed to do it.
